Chelsea Arts Club Trust award recipient Eleanor Arnold will be in residence at Flat Time House this summer. This collaboration between Flat Time House and the Chelsea Arts Club Trust is an opportunity for a post-graduate student or recent graduate to engage with Flat Time House as a space for dialogue and experimentation. 

Eleanor Arnold works across sculpture and performance. Her work explores what happens when systems begin to break down, using movement, light, sound and rhythm to push familiar structures beyond the point where they work as expected. Although these systems often appear technological, they are closely connected to the body and everyday human experience. Through sculpture, performance and installation, Arnold explores themes of control, perception and the effort involved in appearing to function smoothly. By embracing disruption, excess and instability, her work reveals the fragility and complexity that can lie beneath seemingly ordered systems. She is currently studying MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths.

Flat Time House is pleased to be collaborating with AICA-UK and AICA France for a second year to support a residency exchange for art critics who are members of AICA, the International Association of Art Critics. The residency is organised in partnership with Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz (MABA), Nogent-sur-Marne in the eastern suburbs of Paris, who will host a resident from the UK branch of AICA, with FTHo hosting a writer from AICA France. 

Flat Time House's current artist-in-residence is Søren Rye. Søren will spend his time at FTHo working in the studio and exploring the archive, while continuing ongoing research at the Warburg Institute on the relationship between artworks and their photographic reproduction. He is particularly interested in what photographic documentation cannot convey, and how this absence creates space for projection and narrative. Søren will move between the Warburg Institute and Flat Time House, both organisations sharing a commitment to experimentation, though they work with knowledge through different traditions.

Chelsea Arts Club Trust award recipient Katie Shannon will be in residence at Flat Time House this summer. This is the first-ever residency at Flat Time House for a Chelsea Arts Club Trust awardee, an opportunity for a recent graduate artist to engage with Flat Time House as a space for dialogue and experimentation. 

Katie Shannon is an artist based between Glasgow and London, working across drawing, installation, printmaking, textiles, writing, performance, curation, music and collaborative formats. Her practice centres on the event as medium, exploring temporalities, collective intimacy, and states of energetic unrest. Rooted in a socialist, feminist, and materially led approach, her work navigates themes of class, sociality, and counter-culture, using repurposed or ‘low’ materials, laborious processes, and printmaking as means of dissemination to propose alternative economies of making and meaning.

Flat Time House is pleased to announce that artist Eloise Hawser will be undertaking a studio residency at Flat Time House in partnership with Knotenpunkt. The residency will culminate in a solo exhibition at FTHo in 2025, in addition to a new commission to be presented as part of I Find Myself, a Barbara Steveni retrospective upcoming at Modern Art Oxford. Drawing from her longstanding interest in the materiality of modern life, Eloise has been invited to undertake original research into Barbara Steveni's collection of studio materials – specifically over a decade's worth of newspapers – with a focus on Barbara's home-studio in Anstey Road Peckham as a site of artistic production, conversation, and reflection on past endeavours.

Isabel English’s recent work has developed from an interest in material culture and its relationship to clothing and garment construction, with a particular awareness to the confluence between the architectural body of the home and the concealing/protective nature of clothing. Her research whilst on residency at Flat Time House will consider the legacy of Artist Placement Group (APG) in engaging with industrial processes – in particular how instinctual needs are manifested within production techniques. This will be investigated within the context of the house as a conceptual tool, as well as Latham’s idea of the Body Event.

Lyónn Wolf’s current residency with Flat Time House focuses on questions of time and trans temporality, thinking upon how the collapse of ecosystems brought about by colonial extractive logics shapes our understandings of reproduction, ageing and work.

As a way of sharing work in progress, Wolf has invited Iarlaith Ní Fheorais, Linda Stupart and Raju Rage with Nad MA (Mexico) to respond to auto theoretical writing that brings states of transformation, popular science fiction and family abolition into weird communion. The presentation will also include an artist-made zine featuring a contribution from artist, academic, activist, and curator Promona Sengupta. A limited number of copies of the zine will be available by donation to a Palestinian solidarity relief fund.

The residency, a partnership with Askeaton Contemporary Arts in County Limerick, Ireland, brings about this public programme and Wolf’s first UK solo exhibition in 2025.

In 2024–5 Flat Time House are partnering with Askeaton Contemporary Arts in County Limerick, Ireland, to present the work of Lyónn Wolf, with an artist residency, public programme and first UK solo exhibition.

Over the past decade Wolf has developed an interdisciplinary practice, oscillating between installation, performance, and experimental workshop formats. Key to their approach has been an ongoing practice of DIY publishing, often done collectively, to traverse queer economies and spatial politics, the lived present and imagined futures. Incorporating auto-fiction and anecdote, Wolf engages a tradition of queer-transfeminist working class vernacular and ethics, finding forms of recycling, thrift and ephemera to pose questions about value, accumulation, and authorship that, in their own words, “posits the imagination as a political tool with radical potential that can exist and erupt anywhere and at any time.”

On Saturday 3 August, a special reading and performance event will occur, details to be announced soon.

Launched in the summer of 2023 What Time is Love? is an ongoing programme of conversations with artists from the Intoart Studio hosted by Flat Time House. What Time is Love? invites the group of seven artists to use Flat Time House as a space to reflect, talk about their practice and think about where they want to go next.

Flat Time House and Intoart are collaborating on a new residency that invites the development of new writing through research at Flat Time House and in conversation with artists from the Intoart Studio.

We are excited to announce Amber Hahn as Intoart Writer in Residence for 2023/2024. Amber Hahn is an artist and writer based in Peckham, London. She works with people through different methods of dialogue, collaboration and workshops with an interdisciplinary practice that encompasses installation, sound and choreography. As well as working with the artists over the next nine months, she will spend time with the John Latham archive to draw upon the theoretical ideas and reciprocal relevance between Intoart and FTHo as spaces for alternative education, critical thinking and reflective practice.  

Artist Christopher Steenson is in residence at Flat Time House to develop a new commission drawing from research into John Latham’s work Big Breather (1972), a structure which simulated the movement of tides using sea water and a bellow system, and which was considered by Latham to present a method of capturing tidal energy. Whilst in residence Steenson has used video and sound recordings to explore how the building connects to its surrounding environment, thinking upon the circulatory action of inhalation and exhalation in relation to Latham's ideas around event structure.

The resulting commission, Breath Variations, will be presented at Flat Time House between 12–14 May 2023. More information to follow.

William Evans and Julia Crabtree in collaboration with Alice Hattrick are developing a major new project for Flat Time House’s garden. Over the next 6 months the group will ‘excavate’ the John Latham archive, as well as the garden itself, to consider the conceptual and material aspects of the site. In his younger days Latham was a market gardener and his lifelong passion for gardening is demonstrated at Flat Time House by the integration of a conservatory for planting into the studio he built for himself in 1985. Alongside research into Latham and the site, their research will consider permaculture, care, community, collective action, deep time, and issues of classification. They will use Latham's thinking on making and living, and his inquiry into time and ecology, to investigate the relationship of the garden and botany to authority and power. A public event in October 2021 will share their research.

Artist Kelly Lloyd is currently undertaking a research residency at Flat Time House focusing on John Latham’s collection of books. Latham’s library, which includes books intended for the making of artwork as well as for research purposes, has never been catalogued or the subject of sustained investigation. In addition to being interested in Latham's ideas concerning the intersection between time and value, Kelly Lloyd will explore the library with particular interest in Latham's personal books vs. books for work, marginalia and other physical interventions, and personal collections as forms of portraiture. Kelly Lloyd will present her research through a public outcome in September 2021.

/origin\forward/slash\ is the infrathin banner under which, behind which and through which a band of artists and philosophers are exploring their mutual fascinations and antagonisms with Martin Heidegger’s essay The Origin of the Work of Art (1950).

Currently on a remote placement, the group have extended John Latham’s body-based floor plan of Flat Time House with an additional virtual room, ‘the other hand.’ Here they co-habit from time to time, using the web interface as a way of experimenting with formats for visual and verbal thinking together and adding victuals to their archive cabinet. 

The /origin\forward/slash\ group are Steven Claydon (Independent), Marie Hay (De Montfort University), Sacha Golob (Kings College, London), Jo Malt  (Kings College, London), Hester Reeve (Sheffield Hallam University), Mark Titmarsh  (University of Technology, Sydney), Georgios Tsagdis  (Leiden University | Erasmus University Rotterdam). This project is lead by Hester Reeve (Reader in Fine Art, Sheffield Hallam University) in association with The Centre for Philosophy and Visual Arts (Kings College London).

The /origin\forward/slash\ group hosted live online events in June 2021, and with Art & Language (Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden) and Michael Corris in 2023. Their exhibition launches at Flat Time House in Autumn 2023. 

Independent curator and writer Jes Fernie is Curator in Residence at Flat Time House in January and February 2019. She will be developing her Archive of Destruction project,a critical analysis of public artwork made over the last century that has been destroyed by natural causes or by human action through fear, boredom, greed, decay and love. She will be looking into FTHo archives and developing partnerships in Amsterdam, Great Yarmouth and London.

Flat Time House is delighted to announce a new collaboration with the Royal College of Art, MA Writing Programme. For 15 Months between Autumn 2018 and Autumn 2019 students will work with and from FTHo to produce an event or series of events culminating with the group collectively acting as editors of the 2019 edition of NOIT, FTHo's annual journal of John Latham's art and ideas.

This residency continues FTHo’s role as a centre for alternative learning, and will give an opportunity for the students to experience first-hand how an artist or a writer might approach a residency in a collection or public institution. The writing students will have access to the John Latham Archive and will explore Latham’s practice, his theoretical ideas and their continued relevance.  The form, nature and content of the events and publication will be determined by the group, but will derive from the context of sessions in the space. FTHo will help guide and inform the students to produce something that takes into the account the context, environment and history of the space, in order to generate something ambitious, while also sensitive and germane.

Mary Hurrell will be on residence during October and November 2017 at FTHo, as part of the Radical Affinities collaborative curatorial project between Kunstraum and Flat Time House, London, supported by Cockayne, Grants for the Arts. During the residency Hurrell will be using the John Latham Archive to develop research towards a new body of work.

The Radical Affinities residency will culminate with a solo exhibition and performance at Kunstraum and FTHo in 2018.
