A relaxed afternoon of food and conversation, performance, talks and installed art works. Inviting an exploration of themes in art and socially engaged practice, from economies and resources, to power and indigenous knowledges. The gathering will build upon a collective narrative that considers ways of critiquing, shifting and transforming hierarchies, and building upon vulnerability. 

Contributing artists and curators: Amina Lawal Agoro, Manon Awst, Jordan Rowe, Kate Mahony, Laura Eldret, Monica Tolia, Rebecca Moss and Taey Iohe. 

As part of the exhibition What Is Power?, Jeremiah Day has invited Civil Rights Activist, Museum Organizer and Storyteller JoAnne Bland to contribute a special online talk. Bland grew up and lives in Selma, Alabama and became active in the civil rights movement when she was eight years old – part of the famed ‘Children’s Crusade’, and marched across the Selma bridge with Martin Luther King, Jr.  Bland later came to realise the political meaning of memory and went on to co-found the National Voting Rights Museum to preserve the legacy and principles of ‘the struggle’. Her talks deal with the history of the Civil Rights Movement and segregation and the struggle to achieve Voting Rights.

Taking place between July 2023 and January 2024, Constellations ° Assemblies are free online events open to all artists, curators, practitioners, commissioners, and those working across or interested in public art, social practice and regeneration. Constellations 2023 is curated by UP Projects in partnership with Flat Time House and in association with Liverpool Biennial. 

As part of the Breath Variations exhibition programme, this in-conversation between artist Christopher Steenson and creative geographer Sasha Engelmann provides an exciting opportunity to hear more from Steenson regarding his practice, his residency at Flat Time House, and his new body of work. Engelmann has been invited to expand on themes present in the exhibition, such as affinitive listening and the poetics of air, through the lens of her own research. As part of the event, there will be an opportunity for the audience to join the conversation and ask questions, as well as to visit the exhibition beforehand and afterwards.

Flat Time House (FTHo) and Wayi Wayi Art Studio and Gallery, are hosting an online ‘Incidental Mpala’ to discuss how a greater platform for Zambian art can support both social change and a greater awareness of sustainable ways of working.

Online event with introductions by Gareth Bell-Jones, Agness Buya and Yande Yombwe. Presentation by Dr. Andrew Mulenga and conversation with artists Benjamin Mibenge, Mulenga Mulenga Jestina and Edith Sampa Chiliboy.

The board game Art & My Career created by Belgian-Spanish artist Olivia Hernaïz approaches the under-representation of women and gender minorities in the contemporary art world. This is a special opportunity for players of any gender to play the game and discuss the ideas within it in a mediation session with Hernaïz and specially invited arts professionals, artists and academics.

Olivia Hernaïz: ‘Since the beginning of my career, I faced many challenges related to my status as a female artist. I therefore conceived a game that depicts different careers in the art world in the West. The structure of the game is inspired by the game “Career”, made in the fifties by the American sociologist James Cooke Brown. The content of the game was made on the basis of hundreds of confidential testimonies of female and male players in the art world.’

From artist to curator, including professor, gallerist, art educator, art historian and museum director, the participants are invited to put themselves in their shoes in order to better understand their work conditions and their struggle. The playful form of the game makes it possible to subtly approach this sensitive subject. The game sessions aim to open the dialogue and allow participants to express their opinions, share their gaming experience and, if appropriate, reflect on their personal stories.

Panel discussion with Dr. Althea Greenan, Curator of the Women’s Art Library (Goldsmiths), Chloe Turner and Lauren Craig, reflecting on their experience of engaging with the WAL and the screening of a newly commissioned film by Holly Antrum on the WAL.

The spirit of the Women's Art Library, as a space of Being, Making and Becoming, manifests in the traces left behind by the people who have passed through the space since its formation. It is a place that connects people and ideas across generations, movements and geographies. It began as the Women Artists Slide Library, an artists' initiative that developed into an arts organization publishing catalogues and books as well as a magazine from early 1983 to 2002. WAL actively collects slides, ephemera and documentation of women’s art practice, and functions as a creative space for artists, curators and researchers to convene, explore and make new work. The event will celebrate the work of Dr. Althea Greenan, Curator of the Women’s Art Library, and will highlight how the archive has been used and experienced, its value as an intergenerational resource for political and artistic activism, and the possibilities and tensions of the WAL as a sanctuary and explorative space within a larger institution.

The event also coincides with the release of a film commissioned by Art360 by Holly Antrum on location at the Women’s Art Library with contributions from some of the many artists, curators and researchers who have engaged with and made new work at the WAL.

Theatrum Mundi is pleased to invite you to the launch of Site Report, its latest book by Glasgow based artist Rhona Warwick Paterson. The book was commissioned as part of Rhona’s fellowship with Theatrum Mundi. Rhona is a visual artist, poet and research practitioner whose principle research interests have focussed on the contexts and processes of creativity in response to urban space. 

Flat Time House will host the launch of the book with a public reading of the text introducing some of the characters inhabiting the book. 

The /origin\forward/slash\ group, currently on a digital placement at Flat Time House, invite you to a live presentation by five of their members:

How can art be a location or place of ‘dwelling’ in our contemporary situation and why should it matter to us? What does it mean to be ‘at-home-in-the-world’ and if, as Heidegger maintained, we are suffering from the ‘plight of homelessness’, does this imply that domestic, artistic or philosophical action is called for? Maybe all these areas need to combine and risk blurring boundaries (we call this the ‘Heidegger Lasagne’)? We welcome you at our virtual table where each of us shares through thinking and materials their current location in the House of Art. Presentations will be followed by open discussion together. We are particularly keen to honour video link technology’s role during the past few years in affording relationships, connections and idea formation across the planet.

For Event Structure: Holistic Reading Room artist Grace Ndiritu will lead a group reading of John Latham's text Event Structure, which focuses on ‘Deep Time’ and group work. The reading will be interspersed by silent meditation breaks led by Ndiritu. Ndiritu’s intervention seeks to transform notions of group experiments from history to the present day through social practice. This commission reveals a resonance between her practice and Latham’s lifelong aim to bring reflective and intuitive modes of thinking to wider society – most clearly manifested in his work with the Artist Placement Group, a pioneering organisation that negotiated placements for artists within industry and government.

FTHo is delighted to screen John Smith's influential 1988-91 film Slow Glass, as part of Anna Barham’s current exhibition /S/T/R/O/B/E////L/I/C/K//// . For this special event at FTHo John Smith will introduce Slow Glass with Anna Barham, who has chosen to present the film for its parallels with her own newly produced work, its investigation of image and language, and resonance with John Latham’s thinking.

Renowned for its formal ingenuity, subversive wit and oblique storytelling, John Smith's significant film and video works have been shown in museums, galleries and cinemas around the world for more than four decades.

Learn to make dye from alkanet roots retrieved from the Flat Time House garden during the garden’s current renovation with natural dyer Rachel Jones. Discover a range of other plants in the immediate area which can be used for dye, along with dye processes to make site-specific, time-specific colour palettes.

During the workshop you will have access to a detailed archive of natural dyes from the 1970s with digital access after the workshop for future experimentation.

The workshop is suitable for all abilities and ages. Materials are provided. We request that workshop participants wear a face covering whilst indoors if they are able.

Workshop is free but places are very limited.

The event is now fully booked but places are likely to come up on the waiting list.

Flat Time House are excited to announce the opening of new studios and research space alongside a research project and plans for a new garden for the gallery. This open weekend will give a special one off opportunity to view our archives and collections and plans for our outdoor spaces.

The house, garden and outbuildings will be open from 12 to 6pm on Saturday & Sunday 2-3 October

Throughout the house will also be a rare opportunity to view never before exhibited materials from the newly catalogued John Latham collection of artworks, and browse newly rehoused photographs from the John Latham Archive.

Visitors will also be able to explore the new research and studio spaces and spend time in the Flat Time House garden including a display of materials from research by artists William Evans and Julia Crabtree with writer Alice Hattrick.

3-4pm – Talk by Sean Ketteringham presenting new research into the collection of artwork. Followed by Q & A.

4-5pm – Opportunity to view the collections, research spaces, gardens and exhibited materials with refreshments in the Flat Time House garden.

5-6pm – Reading of new writing by Alice Hattrick, followed by in-conversation with Hattrick with artists William Evans and Julia Crabtree, discussing their research and plans for a new garden at Flat Time House.

Places for talks are free but booking is essential. The house will also will also be open to visitors (no booking required) from 12–6pm Saturday and Sunday to view collections.

Artist Kelly Lloyd is currently undertaking a research residency at Flat Time House focusing on John Latham’s collection of books. Latham’s library, which includes books intended for the making of artwork as well as for research purposes, has never been catalogued or the subject of sustained investigation. Since March 2021 Lloyd has explored the library with particular interest in Latham's personal books vs. books for work, marginalia and other physical interventions.

Kelly Lloyd will present her research on Saturday, 18 September 2021 at 3pm. Specifically, she will present a speculative library (2006-2021), and read excerpts from a small publication containing thoughts on personal book collections as portraits and the place of books in the archiving and preservation of artist homes and studios, as well as reflections on conversations with Flat Time House Director/Curator Gareth Bell-Jones, Noa Latham, son of John Latham and Barbara Steveni and Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary and Lisa Stone, Curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection from 1996–2020.
